In 2004 , Jacqueline Furlepa spent two months in Mombasa on charity work.

 

Whilst there she met Rose who lived in the slums of Bombolulu in Mombasa. Rose set up a school in 2001 to provide basic education for the children of the slums, many of whom are orphaned through HIV. They can not afford state schooling due to the state education system insisting on all children providing their own unforms, books and transportation to school.

Rose rented a church hall which had no facilities, not even tables and chairs. The children sat on the dirt floor with books on their laps whilst Rose educated them. Rose maintanted a few text books from which she wrote up exercises onto the blackboard. The school managed to survive due to her dedication and a few shillings donated by some parents.

During Jacqueline's stay in Mombasa, she often spent time with Rose in the school helping with English, Maths and developing the children's creativity. For the first time in their lives they painted, played music and acted out a short musical drama. Many of the children did not know how to play! For these deprived individuals this sense of freedom to be creative proved to be exciting and stimulating.

 

On her return to the UK Jacqueline decided she wanted to help the children of the slums more. So she set up the charity to work with the school to provide financial and educational support.
